It could be, you also have the wrong perception and just follow the existing skincare trends. Come on, check, are there any skincare mistakes below that you could do?

5 Biggest Skincare Mistakes

1. Wrong order in which you use your skincare

The order in which you use your skincare is still wrong. The rules are simple, use skincare from the lightest texture to the heaviest. First, free your face from makeup first! Don’t make mistake with this!

For basics, use skincare with the most liquid/watery texture first. Then followed by something thicker (a little thick, but still runny) and creamier (like whipped cream). That is, the correct order is toner/essence, serum, moisturizer, and oil.

Heavy textured products usually contain oil. Its function is as a “blanket” for the skin to keep skin moist and protect it from the outside. So, the lightly textured ingredients that you apply afterward cannot penetrate well into the skin.

The second rule, use skincare with a low pH content first, aka from acidic to alkaline pH. The lower the pH, the easier it will penetrate the skin! Some of the ingredients with a low pH are AHA, BHA, and vitamin C.

2. Mix skincare ingredients that you shouldn’t mix

In your skincare routine, there are skincare ingredients that you shouldn’t mix. This is the importance of reading the skincare content before using it!

Skincare usually contains one active ingredient that offers certain results on the skin, for example, niacinamide which can lighten the skin. Well, some of these active ingredients combined can irritate and damage the skin barrier. Instead, you immediately buy one product that already contains the two active ingredients that you want.

For those of you who have acne and are using benzoyl peroxide, don’t combine it with chemical exfoliators, such as AHA and BHA! This combination creates a hot, stinging sensation on the skin, and can widen the pores of the facial skin.

You can use a combination of these ingredients alternately, on different days, or find alternatives to these active ingredients. Well, you can see the other combination rules in the table below.

3. Lazy to re-apply sunscreen or don’t use it at all

You are still lazy to re-apply sunscreen or don’t use sunscreen at all. Without the right amount of sunscreen, all skincare series will be in vain due to sun exposure that can penetrate the skin.

Sunlight contains UV A and UV B which cause darkening and aging of the skin. In fact, according to WHO, UV A can cause skin cancer. Hence, sunscreen is a must for the skincare series. The recommended dose of sunscreen is a quarter of a teaspoon. You can use sunscreen at the end of the skincare series before putting on makeup.

Ah, you don’t need to use sunscreen, my foundation already has an SPF.

If so, you should apply 1/4 teaspoon of your foundation as well. This means that you have to pump the pump-type foundation 11 times! Imagine what will your face look like.

Re-applying sunscreen is no less important. Calculate when you have to reapply sunscreen with the formula 10 minutes x SPF sunscreen number. For example, your sunscreen has an SPF of 30. That means you have to reapply within 10 minutes x 30 SPF = 300 minutes or 5 hours.

4. Keep skincare in the wrong place

Maybe you keep skincare in a place where it shouldn’t be. Skincare doesn’t have to be stored in the refrigerator!

Some people like to keep skincare in the refrigerator, maybe you too. All skincare should be stored at room temperature or normal temperature. However, some skin care formulas are better when stored in a cold environment, for example, vitamin C is easily oxidized when exposed to sunlight. So, you should store it in a closed place or the refrigerator.

Water-based skincare (such as toner or sheet mask), you don’t need to store it in the refrigerator, unless you want a cooler and calming effect. There is also skincare that should not be stored in cold or too hot places, such as sunscreens that are more stable at room temperature.

5. Using too much skincare without knowing the needs of your skin

You follow trends, such as your 10 step skincare routine, without knowing what your skin needs and using too much skincare. There are only 3 basic skincare items: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

The use of skincare in layers can irritate due to various reactions that occur on the skin. It’s been like that, the fall, you can even waste money.

Did you know, most types of products other than basic skincare have the same formula. The price is different. For example, moisturizer contains relatively the same content as eye cream. So, if your moisturizer is safe to use around the eyes, why not?

You can also try the skincare diet, namely by reducing the range of skincare and only using basic skincare. Naturally, the skin will undergo a detoxification process from the accumulated chemical content. Apply this for a few days and see what happens to your skin!

So, there are five mistakes that you might make when using skincare. From now on, try changing your habits in using skincare! Congratulations on caring for your facial skin!
